Whether you have been newly diagnosed, are a new patient or are currently receiving treatment, our approach to caring for the patient with cancer focuses on treating the whole patient, not just the disease.

Radiation therapy (sometimes called radiotherapy or irradiation) is a type of cancer treatment that uses high-energy waves of X-rays delivered by a machine called a linear accelerator. In high doses, radiation kills cells or keeps them from growing or dividing.

Radiotherapy can be used alone or in combination with chemotherapy and/or surgery to treat many kinds of cancer. Radiation oncologists work closely with medical and surgical oncologists to tailor treatment to each patient’s specific needs, based on the type of cancer, its location and size.

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a state-of-the-art treatment that delivers radiation to a tumor with more precision and accuracy, resulting in fewer side effects for the patient.

Successful IMRT therapy requires the expertise of highly specialized physicists to support the treatment planning process. Washington Health System Radiation Oncology in partnership with UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, works in tandem with nationally recognized specialists at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Shadyside, via telemedicine capabilities, to develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient.
