UPMC Washington’s Lactation Program promotes, encourages, and supports breastfeeding by providing expert care, education, and resources for new families. Our dedicated team is committed to helping you build confidence and achieve your breastfeeding goals every step of the way.

Breastfeeding

At UPMC Washington Hospital, our Lactation Program is here to ensure you have the support and resources you need throughout your breastfeeding journey. We provide services both before and after your baby’s arrival, so you never have to feel alone.

Services include:

  • Prenatal Breastfeeding Class: Learn the basics of feeding your newborn from a certified lactation consultant. To register, call 724-223-3173.
  • In-Hospital Support: Our nurses and lactation consultants provide hands-on guidance to help you and your baby establish successful feeding practices during the first hours and days after birth.
  • Post-Discharge Follow-Up: After you leave the hospital, our lactation consultant will contact breastfeeding and chestfeeding families to check in, answer questions, and offer additional support and guidance.
  • Education and Resources: We provide current breastfeeding and chestfeeding educational materials for patients, families, and members of the community.

Having support from family members, caregivers, and employers can make your breastfeeding or chestfeeding experience more comfortable, rewarding, and successful.

We encourage you to take advantage of these services whenever needed. With the right support and resources, you’ll gain confidence, meet your feeding goals, and enjoy this special time with your baby.

Feeding and the use of products that mom and baby may need can be overwhelming, an outpatient lactation consultation can help and is available for a small fee.
