“Spring” is here. This warm weather has everyone thinking about grilling season! As a reminder, watch your sodium intake when cooking. Sometimes prepackaged BBQ sauces and or store bought seasoning mixes are higher in sodium. Read the labels or make your own.

Here is great seasoning mix that is lower in sodium and you can make it at home and keep in your cupboard.

Blackening Seasoning

2 teaspoons paprika

1 teaspoon ground dried thyme

2 teaspoons onion powder

2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon ground cumin

Instructions

Mix all ingredients together in a container and store in a cool, dry place.  ( Approx. 16 servings)

Suggested uses: For meat or  fish,  lightly coat meat or fish with olive oil, then sprinkle with spice mix; optional rub into meat. May sprinkle onto vegetables for roasting. Grill, broil, roast or sauté as desired.

Serving: 1 tsp contains approximately 145mg Sodium.
