Ed and Glenda Cox

Most Valuable Volunteer-October

Ed and Glenda Cox

Ed and Glenda (Richmond) Cox have been selected as the Most Valuable Volunteer for October. Ed grew up in Amity and is one of four siblings. Glenda grew up in Washington-one of three sisters. This dynamic duo has been married for 57 years this coming December and have two sons, John and Scott, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren with another due October 2023.

They have known each other since they were 13 years old! After high school graduation, Ed served our country in the US Air Force and was deployed to Vietnam serving there in 1968 and 1969. Ed served our country as an airplane mechanic. Glenda shared that she’s lived on the same block for 70 years, with the exception of a few months in Massachusetts.

Ed and Glenda have a long history of being involved in the Washington community. When their sons were attending Washington High School, you could see them both cheering for their sons who were involved in soccer and wrestling. Ed worked full time as a machine operator retiring from Dynamet. Glenda retired from Canonsburg General Hospital and worked in several departments, the last being medical imaging. When asked what made them want to volunteer-both said: they want to help people. They didn’t want to sit at home and thought the hospital would be a good fit for them. Both said, independently of each other, how much they love being around people. It’s a perfect fit for the hospital and the Cox’s.

Glenda became a volunteer at the hospital in October 2011. She’s worked primarily in the Gift Shop over the last 12 years and has served on the Auxiliary Board. Additionally, she comes in twice a week to make sure the candy, chips and goodies are ordered and well-stocked for purchase in the shop. She’s accumulated over 4,200 hours to date. Ed started volunteering in January 2016. He also works in the gift shop and has amassed 3,900 hours of service. In keeping up with Glenda’s extra time, Ed comes in twice a week to help rack the soda in the shop and storeroom and is a whiz at putting together displays used in the gift shop. Both work vendor sales, the basket raffle, and the Brunch with Santa, always as a team, and help wherever and whenever they are needed.

In addition to volunteering at the hospital, Glenda and Ed are very involved at Glenn Street Free Methodist Church. It’s part of the fabric of their lives. Each week Ed serves as an usher and helps with maintenance projects at the church. They are both involved with collections counting. The theme of giving back can be witnessed with their continuous involvement in the community, whether it’s at church or the hospital.

In their free time, both talk about working in the garden and maintaining a nice yard. They also travel frequently to Ohio to see their sons and grands. They are season ticket holders to the Washington WildThings and enjoy watching the games.

Please congratulate them for being selected as October’s Most Valuable Volunteer!
