FREE LITTLE LIBRARY
Washington Health System partners with
Community Action Southwest to better our community.
June 2016 – Washington, PA.
Washington Health System (WHS) and Community Action Southwest (CAS) hosted a ribbon cutting after a Little Free Library was installed in front of WHS Washington Hospital. The Library box is located on the corner of Wilson Ave near the bus stop and entrance to the Hospital parking garage.
The Little Free Library campaign is an ongoing fundraising and literacy awareness project. CAS has spearheaded this project in our community and began implementation in 2016. They plan to place at least 30 free libraries throughout our community within the next year. Community leaders, corporations and CAS supporters are invited to sponsor a Little Free Library, which is an outdoor cabinet that provides easily accessible, free books to the community. All Little Free Libraries in our area are locally handcrafted and selectively placed near early childhood education centers, public housing communities, and lower income neighborhoods.
“Staff, volunteers, patients and community members are encouraged to participate in this free community book exchange,” said Gary Weinstein, CEO of Washington Health System. “An individual's ability to read is related to success in many aspects of life, not least of which is understanding what one needs to do to maintain good health and recover from illness, important goals of Washington Health System."
Community members can borrow books or directly donate books by placing them in any Little Free Library. This includes new or used books for any age group from child through adult. A list of Little Free Library locations can be found at https://littlefreelibrary.org/ourmap/.
“CAS is thrilled about our new partnerships with so many local businesses and organizations that enhance our Little Free Library project. We are excited to unveil the latest library at the hospital, giving those who visit 24/7 access to free books.” said Darlene J. Bigler, Community Action Southwest CEO. “In this way, we can provide books to children and adults, as a simple, effective and inexpensive way to promote language and literacy growth, and enhance education.”
Washington Health System Volunteers will be assisting in the upkeep of the WHS sponsored Little Free Library but volunteers are being recruited to help construct, install and maintain the Little Free Libraries throughout the community. If you are interested in volunteering or making a cash donation please contact CAS at https://caswg.org/volunteer, or by calling 724-225-9550.
